The Tomato Hornworm

*shudder*
Even the picture gives me the heebie jeebies.

The End of an Era

Most things are dead. The tomatoes are still going but they aren't turning red. And, I'm done with tomatoes anyway. There are a few peppers still holding on and the green bean plants that I planted a couple months ago just flowered. Here's the state of the garden as of yesterday, 16 October 2010:

Looks kinda ratty, eh? I am in total disbelief about how many tomatoes are still trying to grow. I remember a day back in April when Bob (neighbor) asked what I was growing. He said, "You're growing tomatoes from seed?! I've never heard of anyone doing that! I don't know if that will even work!" Sure Bob, because those tomato plants that you buy at Lowes weren't started from a seed. I'm glad this is the view of my garden from Bob's yard.

I tore everything out except for the four pepper plants and the three green bean plants. I'm almost certain I'll get nothing from either of them but it's worth a shot, right?

I kept a couple big green tomatoes. I'm going to leave them sit in the window sill for a while and see if they ripen or maybe I'll find a good fried green tomato recipe.

I also dumped my herbs. The basil grew but was dying. The oregano only kinda grew. The cilantro grew wonderfully, got torn up by the squirrels, then never grew again after I re-potted it. That was a fun experiment, but I think next time I'll buy the plants. Maybe chives too.

Now, I'm trying to figure out what to do with my time until next spring. I'll definitely be starting things indoors though so really I only have to wait until later winter.
